Asking Price reduced from $150,000+GST to $125,000+GST - 1st July.

STOP PRESS: 30th May - PURPLE (3yo filly from SIDEREUS NUNICIUS' family) scores an impressive win in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks. Darley trainer Peter Snowden stated after the race "she's a dual Group 1 winner and she's just a lovely filly". "It's a bit early to talk Caulfield Cups and races like that. It's a big jump up to that grade, but if I place her right she'll win her share of races".

STOP PRESS: 4th April - PURPLE (3yo filly from SIDEREUS NUNICIUS family) wins the Group 1 STC Storm Queen Stakes, taking her earnings to over $380,000 from only 10 starts.

STOP PRESS: 28th March - QUARTZ REEF (3yo colt by REDOUTES CHOICE), a 1/2 brother to SIDEREUS NUNICIUS, runs a close second in the Group 3  Manawatu 3yo Classic (2000m) at Awapuni, after nearly leading all of the way.

2009 STALLION BOOKINGS CALL BRETT HOWARD 02 4998 6488 AUS $0 n/a

A major contributing factor to wastage in the thoroughbred industry is poor stallion selection by the broodmare owner. Mares will visit stallions that are incompatible in areas such as soundness and physique, pedigree, aptitude, temperament, etc. Many mare owners are also guilty of "overmating" their mares, ie, putting too big a service fee into the mare in the hope that they will hit the jackpot in the sales ring.

Some of the other ways in which broodmare owners can greatly inhibit their chances of being successful and profitable are:

  • Breeding from inferior mares and/or to inferior stallions (usually poor racetrack performers and/or individuals and/or pedigrees).
  • Breeding to stallions that they think will be "commercial", not knowing that in all likelihood there will not be a market for their progeny.

  • Breeding to overpriced stallions and not shopping around to find out what types of deals might be on offer for various stallions.

We don't unfortunately have total contol over mother nature, so every breeder in the end must accept what she serves up and for this reason luck will always play its part. However, there are breeders each season that manage to turn a profit regardless of the influences of mother nature. These are the breeders (or their trusted advisors) that have an excellent grasp of the above points and this understanding has been acquired by experience and most likely plenty of continuous study.

If you are a relative newcomer to the breeding industry or even a person that's been breeding for years, and you no longer have the time to continuously study the market, then you might like to consider using our services to help with your 2009 stallion selections. You are not charged for accepting our advice. Using a bloodstock agent to help you with your stallion selection and in turn your stallion booking, is like using a travel agent to help you choose and book your travel. Travel agents are paid commissions by the airlines, hotels, car rental companies, etc. When a bloodstock agent makes a booking to a stallion, the stud farm pays the agent a commission. This commision is paid only when the mare is tested in foal and the service fee has been paid in full.

The advice we offer is independent. As we are doing a large number of bookings each year, we have our finger on the pulse of which stallions are fully booked, close to being booked, or what deals might be available in the market place. Each season we also take positions in stallions that we like, hence, hopefully being able to secure the stallion nominations at an even more favourable price for our clients. To discuss how we can help you this season, please call Brett Howard on 02 4998 6488.
